This is your child’s yellow homework assignment sheet for Rdg./Lang. Arts/Writing- Lesson 5. Be sure your child has this sheet in his/her Rdg. folder every day. Ea. Mon., students will receive this yellow assignment sheet outlining all of the hw assignments for the week as well as important notes for parents.
Also, try to listen to your child read ea. night, for at least 20 min. Ask questions about what was read to reinforce comprehension skills. Reading Logs were already due last week on September 30, last Tuesday
The Home Letter is also sent home ea. Mon. to keep you abreast of what skills are being covered in Rdg. & what you should be working on at home as well as suggestions for books to pick up at the library for that week.
This week we will be studying Spelling words that have the Long “i” sound spelled “ie” or “igh”.
Our Comprehension skill this week is CAUSE & EFFECT. A cause is why something happened and an effect is what happened as a result. Look for words such as so,if,then,because & since that indicate a cause/effect relationship.
Our Comprehension strategy that we will be using to develop the above skill is VISULAIZE. As we read, we will look for selection details to picture what is happening. We will also continue to “analyze” what characters say & do and to use text evidence to evaluate what characters are like & what their motives are in the story.
In Grammar, we will be working on distinguishing between singular & plural nouns. Students must remember the rules:
- nouns that end with s,ss,sh,ch,x or z must have –es added to the end to make them plural (class-classes;bush-bushes;church-churches;box-boxes)
- nouns that end with a consonant and y, change the y to i and add –es (berry-berries;library-libraries
- nouns that end with a vowel and y, just add –s (play-plays;toy-toys)
In Writing, we will continue to work on writing “a personal narrative”. A good personal narrative has a strong beginning & a strong ending, the writer’s thoughts & feelings are expressed & details & vivid words help the reader picture the event.
Remember to review all graded papers with your child. Please return any papers stamped-“Parents Please Sign.”
Words that are capitalized on Spelling tests & Spelling assignments that are NOT proper nouns are marked incorrect.
Please encourage your child to hand in assignments on time; late homework is lowered one letter grade.
